Land survey has not been done for 47 years in 20 districts including Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. Khatian is a land document that defines the ownership of the land. Settlement took place in 1930 in some districts.

Jharkhand land

At the time of unified Bihar, the work of survey and settlement of land had started. The survey started in 1975 in Ranchi, Khunti, Simdega, Gumla was not completed even in 47 years. Whereas in Dhanbad-Bokaro, the survey started in 1981, Palamu, Garhwa, Sahibganj, Dumka, Pakur, Jamtara, Godda and Deoghar from 1976-77 has not been completed till date. According to the official document of Revenue and Land Reforms Department, the work of land settlement and survey has been completed in Lohardaga, Latehar, East and West Singhbhum of Jharkhand. The final publication has also been done here, but due to dispute in many districts, the process is stalled.

Khatian itself reveals the identity of the land owner

The Khatian of 1932 in Jharkhand has been made the basis of identification of the locality. Khatian is a land document which not only defines the title of the land, but also gives the identity of several generations of the land owner (ryot). This Khatian is prepared after the survey of the land and the settlement process is completed. In some districts of Jharkhand, the last survey settlement started in 1930 and was completed in 1935. Survey settlement was completed for the last time in 1879, 1894, 1910, 1915 and 1928 in most of the districts. Khatians were prepared only after the final completion of land settlement and survey work, which is proving to be the most important government document today.
